Guidelines for Rack Installation and Placement – Key Considerations

- Load signage – Install one or more clear signs in conspicuous positions on the rack system. Each sign should be at least 20 cm² in area and display, in legible type, the maximum unit load (kg), the maximum average load per shelf level (kg), and the permissible number of unit loads per bay.
- Foundation control for rack‑building integrated systems – For rack‑supported buildings, the foundation settlement must be strictly controlled to ensure normal structural performance. For non‑integrated systems (racks independent of the building), ensure that the rack foundations are separated from the building column footings to prevent structural loads from damaging the building.
- Column base fixing – Rack column bases must be properly anchored to concrete foundations. Determine whether the connection to the floor uses embedded parts with a secondary grouting method, or chemical anchors for direct fixing. The bolt diameter and minimum embedment depth must be calculated based on actual loads, seismic forces, or wind loads. Small racks under 2.4 m in height used for manual loading (without forklifts) may remain unfixed. The concrete for fixed column bases must be cured continuously for 29 days and be able to withstand the required pressure, with uneven settlement kept within acceptable limits for normal use.
- Beam locking devices – For pallet racking (beam‑type racks), each beam end must be equipped with a locking mechanism, or alternatively, nuts and bolts for secure fastening, to ensure the beam remains firmly attached to the upright and does not disengage under upward force. Verify that the lock engages properly. During service, regularly inspect the locking function or bolt tightness, and replace any damaged components promptly.
- Overall structural design – When installing the rack structure, take into account operational requirements, handling equipment, load characteristics, material availability, and site conditions. Choose an appropriate structural form, connection details, and fabrication materials to achieve advanced technology, cost‑effectiveness, safety, and quality assurance.
